Fishing The Lamar River: Canyons and Cutthroats

In the stretch of the river, he was fishing swims Rainbow Trout and Cutthroat Trout. Keep your head on a swivel while fishing up there especially during the fall and late summer. The Grizzley's and Black bears are moving throughout the area a lot trying to fatten up for winter. THE SETUP: He was using a 5-weight rod with a 9 ft 4x leader. The tippet he was using was a Rio product and was 4x as well. As for the fly he was using a size 8 beaded prince nymph. Trying to get down deeper to the bigger fish of those deep pockets he was targeting. It is really effective to fish a pocket with the first fly, then once you feel you have covered it all. Change to a new fly. If you threw a nymph first, go to a dry fly or a streamer. Doing this you can really fish that pocket of water to the fullest pulling out fish that are feeding differently than the fish they are swimming next to!
